A few weeks ago I made a trip with my Grandma and Dad to Esk - a small town outside of Brisbane. These shots are from the cemetery, which is quite old and in which a few of my relatives are resting. This may sound morbid, but I really don't mind visiting cemeteries - I find them fascinating, and sometimes quite beautiful.

They are usually such peaceful places, and I like to see the flowers that relatives or friends have made the time to place beneath the headstones. While the real flowers don't last nearly as long as the fake ones, those too start to disintegrate, reminding us even more that nothing is permanent, and we should cherish what we have surrounding us now...

Nottingham...just a nibble!

Nottingham is probably most famous for being the home of Robin Hood and his merry men. I was fortunate enough to spend some time there, and below are some photos from then. The University is a beautiful campus, with impressive sandstone buildings, and gorgeous gardens.

While Nottingham Castle is no longer standing, you can still visit the site and the original walls are still imposing. I took a tour through the caves underneath the castle (which Robin and his men apparently used to rescue and escape) which were a little spooky. At the base of the castle is the supposed oldest pub in Britain (Ye Olde Jerusalem) which also utilizes the caves to provide cosy little nooks for its patrons. Obviously I went in for a pint :)

The city itself has an interesting mixture of architecture, and it's centre is bustling with people. There are all the usual UK chain stores both in the 'Viccy C' (a.k.a. the Victoria Centre) as well as along the outdoor street malls.

On the way back to the University from the city centre is Wallaton Park. It's a beautiful estate that is the home to many deer these days. When I visited it was "rutting season" and so we had to be cautious of the overly aggressive and excited bucks... haha! The Manor house is now a museum, and is just like something out of an Austin novel. One of the previous owners was a keen animal fan, and by that I mean they had a lot of stuffed exotic animals. These are now on display in the "Life Science" area of the museum (oh, the irony).  It was slightly disturbing, but gave a fascinating glimpse at how the common people used learn about animals from other countries.

I really enjoyed the time I spent in Nottingham. It's a very livable city, has a great history, and many pretty sites.
I hope you enjoyed this little peek!
